We have driven through Connecticut countless times, but in 2024 we stopped and enjoyed the scenery at West Rock Ridge State Park in New Haven.
West Rock Ridge State Park was an easy stop during the drive between New Jersey and Massachusetts. Instead of sitting at another highway rest area, we took the short detour up to the scenic overlook and stretched our legs for a while before getting back on the road.
The road through the park climbs steadily and eventually opens up to a wide view facing New Haven and the surrounding area. On a clear day you can see for miles. It is the kind of overlook that works well for a quick stop because you do not need to commit to a long hike to get something worthwhile out of it.

Judges Cave is a short walk within the park and has a surprisingly large rock formation tucked into the woods. The site has historical significance tied to two judges who hid there in the 1600s after sentencing King Charles I to death in England, but today it mostly feels like a quiet side stop off the main scenic road.

There were a few people nearby, but overall the park felt quiet. Mostly just cars pulling in for a few minutes, people taking in the view, then continuing on their way.
For a place so close to the highway and the city, it feels surprisingly removed from both. The wooded roads, rocky ridges, and overlook make it a good break from interstate driving without turning the day into a major detour.
