Oregon Rail Heritage Center
Owen loves trains, so the Oregon Rail Heritage Center was the perfect place to go! It’s home to beautifully restored steam locomotives, including the famous Southern Pacific 4449, and offers a historical look into Oregon’s rail history. Visitors can explore the engines up close, watch restoration work in progress. There are some great photo ops, but the selection of trains to see where limited at the time. The main draw for us though was the train ride!

Train Ride
Our friend Erin met us there, and we took a train ride that stopped at a nearby amusement park. The ride runs along the Oregon Pacific Railroad, giving passengers a close-up view of the Willamette River and Portland’s industrial side.
It’s a relaxing, family-friendly experience — complete with the sound of the rails and the gentle sway of the cars — that adds a fun, hands-on element to exploring the historic locomotives inside the museum.

Oaks Amusement Park
Oaks Amusement Park is one of the oldest continually operating amusement parks in the country. It’s a nostalgic riverside spot with classic rides, roller coasters, and a century-old skating rink that still draws a crowd.
Whether you’re there for the gentle family rides, the cotton candy, or just the throwback charm, it’s the perfect way to round out a day of Portland adventure. Since we were there as part of the train ride, our stay there was short.
